A Daily Prayer Rule
A Simple Rule
How I try to pray through the day
Morning — Usual Beginning, then the Morning Prayers in full. I close with my family prayers — for [wife's name], for [children's names] and [nephew's name], for my [father] and [brothers] — asking God to hold them through whatever the day brings.
Through the day — the Jesus Prayer, whenever I remember to say it. Grace before and after meals, every time I sit down to eat.
Evening — Usual Beginning, then the Evening Prayers in full. Some nights I add Psalm 90 for extra covering before sleep.
As needed, not on a schedule — the prayer for healing, when someone is sick. The prayer for the departed, when I’m remembering someone who’s fallen asleep in the Lord. The prayer for deliverance, when I sense something pressing in on my home and need to name it and ask God to break it.
This isn’t a rule handed down to me — it’s just what’s actually held, day to day. It’ll keep changing as I do.
Morning Prayers
Arise and Begin — enter the presence of God, ready to engage in unseen warfare, and make the Sign of the Cross, saying:
Usual Beginning
In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Glory to You, our God, glory to You.
O Heavenly King, Comforter, Spirit of Truth, who are everywhere present and fill all things, Treasury of good gifts and Giver of Life, come and abide in us, and cleanse us of all impurity, and save our souls, O Good One.
Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. (3 times)
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Most Holy Trinity, have mercy on us. O Lord, wash away our sins, O Master, pardon our transgressions. O Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities, for Your Name’s sake.
Lord, have mercy. (3 times)
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the Kingdom, and the power, and the glory, of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Troparia to the Holy Trinity
As we rise from sleep we worship You, O good and powerful Lord, and to You we sing the Angel’s hymn: Holy, Holy, Holy are You, O God. Through the prayers of the Theotokos, have mercy upon us.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
Having raised me from my bed, and from my sleep, O Lord, enlighten my mind and heart, and open my mouth to praise You, O Holy Trinity, saying: Holy, Holy, Holy are You, O God. Through the prayers of the Theotokos, have mercy upon us.
Both now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Suddenly the Judge shall come, and the deeds of each of us shall be laid bare. But at midnight, let us cry with fear saying: Holy, Holy, Holy are You, O God. Through the prayers of the Theotokos, have mercy upon us.
Troparia of My Patron Saints
Holy Right-Believing Prince Alexander Nevsky — Tone 4
Pray to God for me, O holy and right-believing Prince Alexander, well-pleasing to God, for I fervently flee to you, the speedy helper and intercessor for my soul.
O blessed Alexander, you were like a revered sprout from a godly root, for Christ revealed you as a sacred treasure of the Russian land, and a new, most glorious and God-pleasing wonderworker. Today, as we gather on your Feast Day with faith and love, rejoicing with Psalms and spiritual hymns, we glorify the Lord who gave you the grace of healing. Entreat Him to save our city and land, that those who dwell in them may be pleasing to God, and that all Orthodox Christians may be saved.
Holy Great Martyr Demetrios of Thessalonica — Tone 3
Pray to God for me, O holy Great Martyr Demetrios, well-pleasing to God, for I fervently flee to you, the speedy helper and intercessor for my soul.
The entire world has found you to be a great champion in times of peril; for you put the heathen to flight, O victorious one. As you brought to naught the boasts of Lyaeus, and gave courage to Nestor in the stadium, in the same way, O Holy Great Martyr Demetrios, entreat Christ God, that He grant us great mercy.
Thanksgiving Prayer of St. Basil the Great
To the Most Holy Trinity
As I rise from sleep I thank You, O Holy Trinity, because of the abundance of Your goodness and long-suffering You have not been upset with me a sinner, nor let me perish in my iniquities; but have shown Your usual love for mankind, and have raised me up when I had fallen into despair, to hasten to praise Your power. Enlighten the eyes of my mind and open my mouth to meditate on Your words, to understand Your commandments, to do Your will, to sing to You in heartfelt confession, and to praise Your all-holy Name, of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Prayer of the Wise Virgins
Glory to You, Almighty King and God; for in Your love for mankind, You have prepared me, an unworthy sinner, to rise from sleep and to gain entrance into Your holy house. Accept, O Lord, the voice of my supplication, as from Your holy and noetic powers. Be pleased that my song, issuing from impure lips, be offered to You with a pure heart and a spirit of humility, that I too may become a companion of the wise virgins, with the bright lamp of my soul, that I may glorify You, Word of God, glorified in the Father and in the Holy Spirit. Amen.
O come let us worship God our King. O come let us worship and fall down before Christ our King and God. O come let us worship and fall down before Christ Himself, our King and God.
Psalm of Repentance
Psalm 50
Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy; and according to the multitude of Your compassions, blot out my transgression.
Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.
For I am conscious of my iniquity; and my sin is continually before me.
Against You only have I sinned, and done evil before You, that You might be justified in Your words, and might prevail when You are judged.
For behold, I was conceived in iniquities, and in sin my mother conceived me.
For behold, You love truth; You have revealed to me the secret and hidden things of Your wisdom.
You will sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be purified. You will wash me, and I shall be made whiter than snow.
You will cause me to hear joy and gladness; the bones that are humbled shall rejoice.
Turn away Your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities.
Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.
Cast me not away from Your presence, and take not Your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and establish me with Your governing Spirit.
Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, and the ungodly shall turn back to You.
Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation, and my tongue shall joyfully declare Your righteousness.
O Lord, You will open my lips, and my mouth shall declare Your praise.
For if You desired sacrifice, I would have given it; You will not take pleasure in whole burnt offerings.
A sacrifice to God is a broken spirit; a broken and humbled heart God will not despise.
Do good, O Lord, to Sion in Your good pleasure; and let the walls of Jerusalem be built.
Then You shall be pleased with a sacrifice of righteousness, the offering and whole burnt sacrifices; then they shall offer calves upon Your altar.
Symbol of Faith
The Creed
I believe in one God, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all ages. Light of Light, true God of true God, begotten, not created, of one essence with the Father, through Whom all things were made.
Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became man. He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered and was buried. And He rose on the third day according to the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge the living and the dead. His kingdom shall have no end.
And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of Life, Who proceeds from the Father, Who together with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, Who spoke through the prophets.
In one, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the age to come. Amen.
Morning Prayer of the Optina Elders
by St. Philaret of Moscow
O Lord, grant that I may meet all that this coming day brings to me with spiritual tranquility. Grant that I may fully surrender myself to Your holy Will.
At every hour of this day, direct and support me in all things. Whatsoever news may reach me in the course of the day, teach me to accept it with a calm soul and the firm conviction that all is subject to Your holy will.
Direct my thoughts and feelings in all my words and actions. In all unexpected occurrences, do not let me forget that all is sent down from You.
Grant that I may deal straightforwardly and wisely with every member of my family, neither embarrassing nor saddening anyone.
O Lord, grant me the strength to endure the fatigue of the coming day and all the events that take place during it. Direct my will and teach me to pray, to believe, to hope, to be patient, to forgive, and to love. Amen.
Through the prayers of our Holy Fathers, Lord Jesus Christ our God, have mercy upon us and save us. Amen.
The Six Psalms
The Hexapsalmos, which opens Orthros. Traditionally read standing, in stillness, as the soul stands before God at the dawn of a new day.
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men. (3 times)
O Lord, You will open my lips, and my mouth shall declare Your praise. (2 times)
Psalm 3 — Awakening & Protection
A prayer upon opening your eyes, thanking God for preserving you through the night and trusting Him for the new day.
O Lord, why do those who afflict me multiply? Many are those who rise up against me.
Many are those who say to my soul, “There is no salvation for him in his God.” (Pause)
But You, O Lord, are my protector, My glory and the One who lifts up my head.
I cried to the Lord with my voice, And He heard me from His holy hill. (Pause)
I lay down and slept; I awoke, for the Lord will help me.
I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people Who set themselves against me all around.
Arise, O Lord, and save me, O my God, For You struck all those who were foolishly at enmity with me; You broke the teeth of sinners.
Salvation is of the Lord, And Your blessing is upon Your people.
Psalm 37 — Confession & Humility
A humble acknowledgment of human weakness, sin, and spiritual need before God.
O Lord, do not rebuke me in Your wrath, Nor chasten me in Your anger.
For Your arrows are fixed in me, And Your hand rests on me;
There is no healing in my flesh because of Your wrath; There is no peace in my bones because of my sins.
For my transgressions rise up over my head; Like a heavy burden they are heavy on me.
My wounds grow foul and fester Because of my folly.
I suffer misery, and I am utterly bowed down; I go all the day long with a sad face.
For my loins are filled with mockeries, And there is no healing in my flesh.
I am afflicted and greatly humbled; I roar because of the groaning of my heart.
O Lord, all my desire is before You, And my groaning is not hidden from You.
My heart is troubled; my strength fails me, And the light of my eyes, even this is not with me.
My friends and neighbors draw near and stand against me, And my near of kin stand far off;
And those who seek my soul use violence, And those who seek evil for me speak folly; And they meditate on deceit all the day long.
But I like a deaf man do not hear, And I am like a mute who does not open his mouth.
I am like a man who does not hear, And who has no reproofs in his mouth.
For in You, O Lord, I hope; You will hear, O Lord my God.
For I said, “Let not my enemies rejoice over me, For when my foot was shaken, they boasted against me.”
For I am ready for wounds, And my pain is continually with me.
For I will declare my transgression, And I will be anxious about my sin.
But my enemies live, and are become stronger than I; And those who hate me unjustly are multiplied;
Those who repaid me evil for good Slandered me, because I pursue righteousness; And they threw away my love as though it were a stinking corpse.
Do not forsake me, O Lord; O my God, do not depart from me;
Give heed to help me, O Lord of my salvation.
Psalm 62 — Soul-Thirst at Dawn
The quintessential morning psalm, expressing deep longing and desire for God’s presence at the start of the day.
O God, my God, I rise early to be with You; My soul thirsts for You. How often my flesh thirsts for You In a desolate, impassable, and waterless land.
So in the holy place I appear before You, To see Your power and Your glory.
Because Your mercy is better than life, My lips shall praise You.
Thus I will bless You in my life; I will lift up my hands in Your name.
May my soul be filled, as if with marrow and fatness, And my mouth shall sing praise to You with lips filled with rejoicing.
If I remembered You on my bed, I meditated on You at daybreak;
For You are my helper, And in the shelter of Your wings I will greatly rejoice.
My soul follows close behind You; Your right hand takes hold of me.
But they seek for my soul in vain; They shall go into the lowest parts of the earth.
They shall be given over to the edge of the sword; They shall be a portion for foxes.
But the king shall be glad in God; All who swear by Him shall be praised, For the mouth that speaks unrighteous things is stopped.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Glory to You, O God. (3 times)
Lord, have mercy. (3 times)
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Psalm 87 — Cry in Distress
A solemn, honest prayer bringing our deepest burdens, anxieties, and inner darkness into God’s presence.
O Lord God of my salvation, I cry day and night before You.
Let my prayer come before You; Incline Your ear to my supplication, O Lord.
For my soul is filled with sorrows, And my soul draws near to Hades;
I am counted among those who go down into the pit; I am like a helpless man, free among the dead,
Like slain men thrown down and sleeping in a grave, Whom You remember no more, But they are removed from Your hand.
They laid me in the lowest pit, In dark places and in the shadow of death.
Your wrath rested upon me, And You brought all Your billows over me. (Pause)
You removed my acquaintances far from me; They made me an abomination among themselves; I was betrayed, and did not go forth.
My eyes weakened from poverty; O Lord, I cry to You the whole day long; I spread out my hands to You.
Will You work wonders for the dead? Or will physicians raise them up, and acknowledge You?
Shall anyone in the grave describe Your mercy And Your truth in destruction?
Shall Your wonders be known in darkness, And Your righteousness in a forgotten land?
But I cry to You, O Lord, And in the morning my prayer shall come near to You.
Why, O Lord, do You reject my soul, And turn away Your face from me?
I am poor and in troubles from my youth; But having been exalted, I was humbled and brought into despair.
Your fierce anger passed over me, And Your terrors greatly troubled me;
They compassed me like water all the day long; They surrounded me at once.
You removed far from me neighbor and friend, And my acquaintances because of my misery.
Psalm 102 — Praise for God’s Mercy
A joyful song recalling God’s compassion, healing, forgiveness, and renewal of our strength.
Bless the Lord, O my soul, And everything within me, bless His holy name.
Bless the Lord, O my soul, And forget not all His rewards:
Who is merciful to all your transgressions, Who heals all your diseases,
Who redeems your life from corruption, Who crowns you with mercy and compassion,
Who satisfies your desire with good things; And your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.
The Lord shows mercies And judgment to all who are wronged.
He made known His ways to Moses, The things He willed to the sons of Israel.
The Lord is compassionate and merciful, Slow to anger, and abounding in mercy.
He will not become angry to the end, Nor will He be wrathful forever;
He did not deal with us according to our sins, Nor reward us according to our transgressions;
For according to the height of heaven from earth, So the Lord reigns in mercy over those who fear Him;
As far as the east is from the west, So He removes our transgressions from us.
As a father has compassion on his children, So the Lord has compassion on those who fear Him,
For He knows how He formed us; He remembers we are dust.
As for man, his days are like grass, As a flower of the field, so he flourishes;
For the wind passes through it, and it shall not remain; And it shall no longer know its place.
But the mercy of the Lord is from age to age upon those who fear Him, And His righteousness upon children’s children,
To such as keep His covenant And remember His commandments, to do them.
The Lord prepared His throne in heaven, And His Kingdom rules over all.
Bless the Lord, all you His angels, Mighty in strength, who do His word, So as to hear the voice of His words.
Bless the Lord, all you His hosts, His ministers who do His will;
Bless the Lord, all His works, In all places of His dominion; Bless the Lord, O my soul.
Psalm 142 — Petition for Guidance
A final morning plea asking God for guidance, protection, and direction throughout the hours ahead.
O Lord, hear my prayer; Give ear to my supplication in Your truth; Answer me in Your righteousness;
Do not enter into judgment with Your servant, For no one living shall become righteous in Your sight.
For the enemy persecuted my soul; He humbled my life to the ground; He caused me to dwell in dark places as one long dead,
And my spirit was in anguish within me; My heart was troubled within me.
I remembered the days of old, And I meditated on all Your works; I meditated on the works of Your hands.
I spread out my hands to You; My soul thirsts for You like a waterless land. (Pause)
Hear me speedily, O Lord; My spirit faints within me; Turn not Your face from me, Lest I become like those who go down into the pit.
Cause me to hear Your mercy in the morning, For I hope in You; Make me know, O Lord, the way wherein I should walk, For I lift up my soul to You.
Deliver me from my enemies, O Lord, For to You I flee for refuge.
Teach me to do Your will, for You are my God; Your good Spirit shall guide me in the land of uprightness.
For Your name’s sake, O Lord, give me life; In Your righteousness You shall bring my soul out of affliction.
In Your mercy You shall destroy my enemies; You shall utterly destroy all who afflict my soul, For I am Your servant.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Glory to You, O God. (3 times)

Evening Prayers
Before Sleep — enter the presence of God, ready to engage in unseen warfare, and make the Sign of the Cross, saying:
Amen.
Prayer of St. Macarius the Great
O Eternal God and King of all creation, who have granted me to arrive at this hour, forgive the sins I have committed this day in deed, word and thought. Cleanse, O Lord, my humble soul from every defilement of flesh and spirit.
Grant that I may pass through this night in peace. When I rise from my humble bed, may I please Your most Holy Name all the days of my life and trample under foot the enemies that wage war against me, whether bodily or spiritual.
Deliver me, Lord, from vain thoughts that defile me and from evil lusts. For Yours is the Kingdom, and the power, and the glory: of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Prayer to Christ
And now, as I lay down to sleep, O Master, grant me repose both of body and soul, and keep me from the dark sleep of sin and from the sensuous pleasure of the dark passions of the night.
Still the assaults of passion and quench the fiery darts of the wicked one which are thrown cunningly at me. Calm the commotions of my flesh and put away all earthly and material thoughts as I sleep.
Grant to me, O God, a watchful mind, chaste thoughts, a sober heart, and a gentle sleep, free from all the fantasies of Satan.
And raise me up again at the hour of prayer, established in Your commandments and holding steadfast within, the remembrance of Your judgments.
Give me the words of Your glorification all night long, that I may praise, bless, and glorify Your most honourable and magnificent Name: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Prayer to Your Guardian Angel
Holy angel who watches out for my wretched soul, forsake me not, and depart not from me because of my lack of restraint and wickedness. Prevent Satan from ruling with his might, this mortal body of mine, and hold me by my feeble hand and lead me in the path of salvation.
O holy Guardian Angel of God, protector of my wretched soul and body, forgive me for all the ways I have saddened you all the days of my life. And though I have sinned today, be my shelter this night. Protect me that I may not upset God with any sin. Intercede with the Lord for me, that He may confirm me in His fear, and reveal me a worthy servant of His goodness. Amen.
Enlighten my eyes, Christ God, that I fall not asleep to death and that my enemy may not say of me: I have overcome him.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
Be the Helper of my soul, O God, for I walk among many snares. Deliver me from them, O Good One, and save me, for You love mankind.
Both now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Let us ever hymn the most glorious Mother of God, who is holier than the holy Angels. With heart and lips let us confess that she is the Theotokos, for she truly bore God incarnate for us and prays ceaselessly for our souls. Amen.
Through the prayers of our Holy Fathers, Lord Jesus Christ our God, have mercy upon us and save us. Amen.
Common Prayers
Prayers said often, alone or with others — found in nearly every Greek Orthodox prayer book.
The Jesus Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.
Prayer of St. Ephraim the Syrian
Said especially during Great Lent, with prostrations
O Lord and Master of my life, take from me the spirit of sloth, despair, lust of power, and idle talk. (prostration)
But give rather the spirit of chastity, humility, patience, and love to Your servant. (prostration)
Yes, O Lord and King, grant me to see my own transgressions, and not to judge my brother, for blessed are You to the ages of ages. Amen. (prostration)
It Is Truly Meet
Hymn to the Theotokos (Axion Estin)
It is truly meet to bless you, O Theotokos, ever-blessed and most blameless, and the Mother of our God. More honorable than the Cherubim, and more glorious beyond compare than the Seraphim, without corruption you gave birth to God the Word: true Theotokos, we magnify you.
Rejoice, O Virgin Theotokos
The Angelic Salutation
Rejoice, O Virgin Theotokos, Mary full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, for you have borne the Savior of our souls.
Prayer of Confession
A daily confession of sins
O Lord my God, I know that I am not worthy nor sufficient that You should come under the roof of the house of my soul, for it is entirely desolate and in ruins, and You have not with me a fitting place to lay Your head.
But as from the highest heaven You humbled Yourself for our sake, so now conform Yourself to my lowliness. And as You consented to lie in a cave and a manger of dumb beasts, so consent also to enter the manger of my dumb soul and my defiled body.
I confess to You, O Lord, the sins I have committed this day, and in all the days of my life, in thought, word, and deed; through all my senses, seen and unseen, known and unknown. Forgive me, O Master, for I have sinned against You more than any man, and have been the cause of my own soul's affliction and defilement.
Cleanse me, O Lord, and grant me a contrite heart, that I may return to You with my whole soul, and sin no more against You, my God and my Savior. Amen.
Grace Before Meals
Christ our God, bless the food and drink of Your servants, for You are holy, always, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
Before the Meal — A Prayer of Gratitude
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, we give thanks to you for this day and this meal.
For this food, for the hands that grew it, prepared it, and set it before us — thank you.
We don’t take this table for granted. Too many sit down to less today.
Let this meal strengthen our bodies, and let this gathering strengthen what’s between us — patience, honesty, good humor.
We entrust this hour to your goodness, and to each other. Amen.
Before the Meal — A Family Gathering Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, we give You thanks for calling us together around this table.
Thank You for the ones seated here, and for the ones who could not be — for every hand that had a part in this meal, and for the years that brought this family to this day.
Forgive us, Lord, for the harsh word held onto too long, the distance we let grow, the love we assumed but did not show.
Bless this food to our bodies and this gathering to our hearts. Where there is division among us, bring peace; where there is silence, bring warmth; where there is distance, bring nearness again.
We entrust this table, and each one seated at it, into Your keeping.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
Grace After Meals
We thank You, O Christ our God, that You have filled us with Your earthly gifts; deprive us not of Your heavenly Kingdom, but as You came among Your disciples, O Savior, and gave them peace, come also to us and save us. Amen.
Prayer Before Study
O Lord Jesus Christ, our God, who is the Wisdom of the Father and the fountain of all understanding, send down upon me now the grace of Your Holy Spirit.
Open the eyes of my mind to receive what I read, and open my heart to be changed by it, not puffed up by it. Let me seek You, not merely knowledge about You. Guard me from vanity of mind and from a spirit of argument without love. Grant me patience with what I do not yet understand, and humility before what I do.
As the Prophet David sang, “The unfolding of Your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple” (Psalm 118:130, LXX). So enlighten now my understanding, that what I learn may bear fruit in a right mind, a humble heart, and a life pleasing to You.
Through the prayers of the Holy Fathers, and all the Saints, have mercy on me and save me. Amen.
A Psalm for Protection
Prayed at Small Compline and traditionally used for protection from fear, affliction, and the “noonday demon.”
Psalm of Protection
Psalm 90
He who dwells in the help of the Most High shall abide in the shelter of the God of heaven.
He shall say to the Lord, You are my helper and my refuge, my God; I will hope in Him.
For He shall deliver you from the snare of the hunters, and from every troubling word.
He shall overshadow you with His shoulders, and under His wings you shall have hope; His truth shall cover you with a shield.
You shall not be afraid of terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day,
Nor of the thing that walks in darkness, nor of the calamity and the demon of noonday.
A thousand shall fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand; but it shall not come near you.
You shall only consider this with your eyes, and you shall see the reward of sinners.
For You, O Lord, are my hope; you have made the Most High your refuge.
No evil shall come near you, nor shall a scourge come near your dwelling.
For He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways.
On their hands they shall bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone.
You shall tread upon the asp and the basilisk, and you shall trample the lion and the dragon underfoot.
Because he has set his hope on Me, I will deliver him; I will shelter him because he has known My name.
He shall cry to Me, and I will listen to him; I am with him in affliction, and I will rescue him and glorify him.
With length of days I will satisfy him, and I will show him My salvation.
For Healing
Said for one who is sick or suffering.
Prayer for Healing
O Lord Jesus Christ, our God, Physician of our souls and bodies, look down in Your mercy upon Your servant [name], who lies in the weakness of sickness.
You who healed the sick by a word, who raised up the paralytic, and who wept at the tomb of Your friend Lazarus — stretch forth Your unseen hand and grant [him/her] healing, if it be according to Your holy will.
Grant [him/her] patience in suffering, peace in [his/her] soul, and strength in [his/her] body. Let no illness separate [him/her] from Your love. Whether You raise [him/her] up in health or call [him/her] nearer to Yourself through this trial, let Your will, not mine, be done.
Through the prayers of the Theotokos, of the Unmercenary Physicians Cosmas and Damian, of the Great Martyr and Healer Panteleimon, and of all the saints, have mercy on Your servant [name], and on us all. Amen.
For the Departed
Said in memory of loved ones who have fallen asleep in the Lord.
Prayer for the Departed
(name)
O God of spirits and of all flesh, who has trampled down death and overthrown the devil, and given life to Your world, do You, the same Lord, give rest to the soul of Your departed servant, (name), in a place of brightness, a place of refreshment, a place of repose, where all sickness, sighing, and sorrow have fled away.
Pardon every transgression which they have committed, whether by word, or deed, or thought. For You are a good God and love mankind; because there is no man who lives and sins not, for You only are without sin, Your righteousness is to all eternity, and Your word is truth.
For You are the Resurrection, the Life, and the Repose of Your departed servant, (name), O Christ our God, and to You we ascribe glory, together with Your Unoriginate Father, and Your All-Holy, Good, and Life-Giving Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.
May their memory be eternal.

Said quietly while approaching the chalice, and again after receiving.
Pre-Communion Prayer
St. John Chrysostom
I believe, O Lord, and I confess that You are truly the Christ, the Son of the Living God, who came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief.
I believe also that this is truly Your own pure Body, and that this is truly Your own precious Blood. Therefore, I pray to You: have mercy on me, and forgive my transgressions, both voluntary and involuntary, of word and of deed, of knowledge and of ignorance.
And make me worthy without condemnation to partake of Your own pure Mysteries, for the remission of sins and unto life everlasting. Amen.
We Have Seen the True Light
Hymn sung after receiving Holy Communion
We have seen the true Light; we have received the heavenly Spirit; we have found the true Faith, worshiping the undivided Trinity, for the Trinity has saved us.
Post-Communion Prayer
O Lord Jesus Christ our God, let Your sacred Body be to me for eternal life, and Your precious Blood for forgiveness of sins. Let this Eucharist be to me for joy, health, and gladness. And in Your dread Second Coming, make me, a sinner, worthy to stand at the right hand of Your glory, through the intercessions of Your most pure Mother and of all Your Saints. Amen.
Family Prayers
For Father and Brothers
O Lord Jesus Christ our God, who taught us to honor father and mother and to love our brethren as ourselves, look down in Your mercy upon my father and my brothers. Preserve them in health of soul and body; guard them from every evil, temptation, and sorrow; and guide their steps in the way of Your commandments.
Grant them peace in their homes, wisdom in their labors, and a firm hope in Your providence. Draw them ever nearer to Yourself, that together we may stand before You in the unity of faith and the bond of love, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
For My Wife, Stephanie
O Lord our God, who joined man and wife together and blessed their union as a great mystery, I entrust to Your loving care my wife, Stephanie. Grant her health, strength, and peace of soul; fill her heart with Your grace and comfort her in every trial.
Bless our life together, that we may grow in love for one another and in love for You, bearing one another’s burdens and rejoicing in one another’s joys. Keep her under the shelter of Your wings, O Christ our God, through the prayers of the Theotokos and all the saints. Amen.
For My Daughters and Nephew
Mariah, Victoria, Sophia, and my nephew Matthew
O Lord Jesus Christ our God, who blessed the little children and said, “Let the little children come to Me, for of such is the Kingdom of Heaven,” watch over Your servants Mariah, Victoria, Sophia, and my nephew Matthew with Your loving care. Guard their souls and bodies from every harm; guide their minds toward truth and their hearts toward virtue.
Grant them good health, a spirit of obedience, and love for You and for one another. Protect them from the snares of this world, and raise up in them a firm and unshaken faith.
Surround them with Your holy angels, and through the prayers of the Great Martyr Marina, the Great Martyr Victoria, Saint Sophia the Martyr, and the Holy Apostle Matthew, lead them in the path of salvation, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
An Orthodox Prayer for the Protection of My Family
Pray as an ongoing guard over your household, asking that harm be kept away before it arrives
O Lord Jesus Christ, our God, who Yourself grew in wisdom and stature, and who commanded us to look after one another in love: look down with Your boundless mercy upon my wife, my children, and every member of my family.
O Master, You know the dangers of this world and the heavy spiritual warfare that surrounds us all today. I confess my worries to You, and I lay the safety and wellbeing of my whole family into Your hands. Send down Your Holy Spirit to enlighten our minds and steady our hearts. Grant us the wisdom to discern right from wrong, the strength to resist temptation, and the courage to flee from harmful influences, toxic relationships, and the deceitful traps of this age.
Command Your Holy Angels to camp around each one of us. Protect us, O Lord, from physical harm, sudden accidents, sickness, and spiritual blindness. Keep us safe in our comings and goings, whether under one roof or scattered out in the world.
Guide our footsteps as we walk into whatever lies ahead. Be our ultimate Guardian, Provider, and Guide, covering each member of my family with the prayers we may otherwise lack. Grant us clean hearts, sharp minds, and a deep reverence for Your truth. May we grow to be steadfast, honorable, and full of faith, honoring one another and glorifying Your holy name.
Through the intercessions of the Holy Theotokos, the holy Guardian Angels, and all the Saints who have pleased You from the beginning of time.
For Yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.
A Prayer for Deliverance from the Unseen Enemy, for Myself and My Household
Pray when you sense a dark pressure already at work against your home, rather than simply asking for it to be kept away
Lord Jesus Christ, our God, You alone know how the enemy works against Your people, even when we cannot see it. Look on me, on my wife, Stephanie, and on my children, Mariah, Victoria, and Sophia, and deliver us from every attack of the evil one — seen and unseen — that is pressing on our home.
You know what is troubling us, Lord, even though it hides itself from us. You see what is wearing down our bodies, unsettling our minds, and turning peace into discord. I am not asking You to explain it. I am asking You to break it.
By the power of Your Cross, drive off whatever dark power has attached itself to this family. The way You delivered the man among the tombs, the way You calmed the storm, the way You spoke to the fever and it left — speak over my house now, and let this leave too.
Watch over my wife, Stephanie. Strengthen her where she is worn thin, restore what has been drained from her, and do not let any shadow rest on her heart.
Watch over my children. Do not let fear, confusion, or darkness take root in them — let them grow up covered by Your hand, knowing only Your peace.
And watch over me, Lord, so I can be a covering for this family instead of the door the harm gets in through. Wherever I have opened a door to the enemy, knowingly or not, close it, and forgive me.
Send Your angel to stand guard around us. Let the prayers of the Theotokos and all the saints surround us like a wall. Let nothing that is not from You find a place to rest in this home.
We are asking not because we understand what is troubling us, but because we know You, and nothing hidden is hidden from You. Have mercy on us, and deliver us — for You are our God, and to You we give glory, together with Your Father from everlasting, and Your all-holy, good, and life-giving Spirit, now and always, and to the ages of ages. Amen.
A Parent’s Prayer for an Adult Daughter and Her Husband
O Lord Jesus Christ, our God, who blessed the wedding in Cana of Galilee and declared marriage to be honorable, look down with love and mercy upon my daughter and her husband.
Master, You have entrusted her to my care since the days of her childhood, and I thank You for the joy of seeing her grow into maturity. Forgive me for the times my heart clings to her as a child, and grant me the wisdom and humility to step back, respecting the independent life and home she has established. Help me to love her with a supportive spirit, honoring her adulthood and placing her completely into Your all-powerful hands.
Bless their union, O Lord. Preserve them in peace, concord, and a mature love that grows deeper with each passing year. Grant them length of days, fair children, progress in life and faith, and fill their house with Your good things. Crown their marriage with Your grace, that they may be of one heart and one mind, walking together in the path of Your commandments.
Be their shield and protector, O Holy Trinity. Guide them through the heavy choices and quiet battles of adult life. Distance them from all harmful influences, and grant them a spirit of wisdom, patience, and mutual forgiveness. When trials arise, steady their hearts with Your supernatural peace and draw them ever closer to You.
Through the prayers of the Holy Theotokos and of all the Saints, bless this new generation, that they may live to Your glory and find salvation in Your heavenly kingdom.
For Yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Growing Into
Prayers and practices from the wider tradition I’m not yet praying regularly, but am turning toward.
This prayer room isn’t finished, and it isn’t meant to be. What’s here reflects where I actually am — what I actually pray. As I grow deeper into the tradition, this space will grow with me. Below are pieces I’m circling, not yet added in full:
The Akathist to the Theotokos — the great hymn of praise to the Mother of God, prayed in full during Great Lent and often devotionally throughout the year.
