1 Corinthians 15:58-58 · 1 Corinthians 16:1-3 · Luke 5:27-32
First Corinthians, chapter fifteen, verse fifty-eight.
58Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord. First Corinthians, chapter sixteen, verses one through three.
1Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given orders to the churches of Galatia, so you must do also: 2On the first day of the week let each one of you lay something aside, storing up as he may prosper, that there be no collections when I come. 3And when I come, whomever you approve by your letters I will send to bear your gift to Jerusalem. Luke, chapter five, verses twenty-seven through thirty-two.
27After these things He went out and saw a tax collector named Levi, sitting at the tax office. And He said to him, Follow Me. 28So he left all, rose up, and followed Him. 29Then Levi gave Him a great feast in his own house. And there were a great number of tax collectors and others who sat down with them. 30And their scribes and the Pharisees complained against His disciples, saying, Why do You eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners? 31Jesus answered and said to them, Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 32I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.

What is the Church teaching your soul today?
Today the Church calls you to get up from the table where you keep count. Levi sat there every day, gathering and keeping, and no one expected him to change. Then Christ looked at him and said two words, and he walked away from it all and set a feast. This is what the resurrection does to a person. If death has lost its sting, then nothing you give in Christ is lost. Your labor is "not in vain." Your coin for a stranger is not wasted. Your open table is not a risk. The Pharisees still stand at the door and ask why Christ eats with people like you. Let them ask. You are not at His table because you are well. You are there because He is the Physician and you came to be healed. And the first sign of that healing is often very plain. The hand that used to close starts to open. So keep the Lord's Day the way Paul asked: worship, then give. Set something aside, a little, every week, in proportion to what God has given. Offer back to Him His own, on behalf of all and for all.
Ascetic posture for today: Before you spend anything on yourself today, set something aside for someone who cannot repay you, and say, "Thine own of Thine own."
