Reformed Systematic Response to Hebrew Roots Movement

Overview

This systematic theology document provides a comprehensive Reformed response to the errors of the Hebrew Roots Movement (HRM), based on analysis of the discussion between Pastor Adam Fannin and Matt Powell (a former HRM adherent). The Hebrew Roots Movement teaches that Christians must observe Torah commandments including Sabbath-keeping, feast observance, dietary laws, and other Mosaic ordinances for righteousness or spiritual growth.

This document demonstrates that such teaching contradicts Scripture, violates the gospel of grace, and misunderstands the relationship between the Old and New Covenants.

I. SOTERIOLOGY - Doctrine of Salvation

A. Justification by Faith Alone (Sola Fide)

Biblical Foundation

Romans 3:28 (LSB): "For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law."

Galatians 2:16 (LSB): "nevertheless knowing that a man is not justified by works of the Law but through faith in Christ Jesus, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the Law; since by works of the Law no flesh will be justified."

Ephesians 2:8-9 (LSB): "For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast."

Reformed Confessional Position

Westminster Confession of Faith 11.1: "Those whom God effectually calls, He also freely justifies; not by infusing righteousness into them, but by pardoning their sins, and by accounting and accepting their persons as righteous; not for anything wrought in them, or done by them, but for Christ's sake alone."

1689 London Baptist Confession 11.1: "Those whom God effectually calleth, he also freely justifieth, not by infusing righteousness into them, but by pardoning their sins, and by accounting and accepting their persons as righteous; not for anything wrought in them, or done by them, but for Christ's sake alone."

Hebrew Roots Movement Error

The HRM fundamentally errs by teaching that Torah observance is necessary for:

  1. Maintaining salvation
  2. Spiritual maturity
  3. Pleasing God
  4. Being truly "grafted in" to Israel

As Matt Powell testified in the interview: "When I was in the Hebrew roots, I remember times where we would open up volumes of the Babylonian Talmud and we would study them... I thought for certain [keeping Passover] is a blessing and God is blessing me because I am fulfilling this feast that he commanded me to fulfill."

This adds works to faith and nullifies grace.

Biblical Refutation

Galatians 5:4 (LSB): "You have been severed from Christ, you who are seeking to be justified by the Law; you have fallen from grace."

Paul's argument in Galatians addresses the identical heresy: Judaizers teaching that Gentile converts must keep the Mosaic Law. Paul declares this "another gospel" (Gal 1:6-9) and states emphatically that any attempt to be justified through law-keeping severs one from Christ and constitutes falling from grace.

Galatians 3:10-11 (LSB): "For as many as are of the works of the Law are under a curse; for it is written, 'CURSED IS EVERYONE WHO DOES NOT ABIDE BY ALL THINGS WRITTEN IN THE BOOK OF THE LAW, TO DO THEM.' Now that no one is justified by the Law before God is evident; for, 'THE RIGHTEOUS SHALL LIVE BY FAITH.'"

The HRM cannot selectively keep portions of the Law (feasts, Sabbaths, dietary restrictions) while ignoring others (temple worship, animal sacrifices, stoning for Sabbath violation). James 2:10 confirms: "For whoever keeps the whole Law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all."

B. The Finished Work of Christ

Biblical Foundation

Hebrews 10:14 (LSB): "For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified."

This verse, quoted by Matt Powell in the interview, demolishes the HRM position. Christ's ONE offering has PERFECTED FOREVER believers. Not temporarily. Not conditionally based on our Torah-keeping. Forever.

John 19:30 (LSB): "Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, 'It is finished!' And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit."

The Greek τετέλεσται (tetelestai) means "paid in full" - a commercial term indicating complete payment of debt. Christ's atoning work is complete, requiring no supplementation through feast observances or Sabbath-keeping.

Hebrew Roots Movement Error

By requiring ongoing observance of feasts with their sacrificial system (as prescribed in Leviticus), the HRM implicitly denies the sufficiency of Christ's sacrifice. As Pastor Fannin noted: "If you're working for your salvation, when you're supposed to be resting, then we're going to endure death spiritually, just as the man who is picking up sticks."

Theological Implications

The book of Hebrews was written specifically to Jewish believers tempted to return to the old covenant system. The author demonstrates:

  1. Christ is superior to angels (Heb 1-2)
  2. Christ is superior to Moses (Heb 3)
  3. Christ's priesthood is superior to Aaron's (Heb 4-7)
  4. Christ's covenant is superior to the Old Covenant (Heb 8)
  5. Christ's sacrifice is superior to animal sacrifices (Heb 9-10)

To return to Torah observance after receiving Christ is to count "the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified an unholy thing" (Heb 10:29).

C. Eternal Security and Assurance

Biblical Foundation

John 10:28-29 (LSB): "and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand."

Romans 8:38-39 (LSB): "For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

Hebrew Roots Movement Error

Many HRM teachers explicitly deny the eternal security of believers. As documented in the interview:

Michael Rood: "Nobody is born again. We have not been saved. Your believing action is the salvation of your souls. Hang in there."

Lex Meyer: "Some people argue that we have already been born of the spirit. We are currently in labor pains, indicating we have not been born again yet."

These statements directly contradict Scripture:

1 John 5:1 (LSB): "Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the One who begets loves the child born of Him."

Note the perfect tense: "has been born" (γεγέννηται, gegennētai) - completed action with ongoing results. Believers have been regenerated, not are waiting to be regenerated.

Practical Application

The HRM's denial of assurance keeps adherents in perpetual bondage, never certain of their standing before God, always striving to achieve what Christ has already accomplished. This is the very antithesis of the gospel of grace.

1 John 5:13 (LSB): "These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life."

God wants believers to know they have eternal life, not to doubt and strive endlessly.

II. COVENANT THEOLOGY - Old vs. New Covenant

A. The Structure of Biblical Covenants

Covenant of Works (Pre-Fall)

God made a covenant with Adam requiring perfect obedience for life (Gen 2:15-17). Adam failed, plunging humanity into sin and death.

Covenant of Grace (Post-Fall)

All subsequent covenants (Abrahamic, Mosaic, Davidic, New) are administrations of the one Covenant of Grace, culminating in Christ.

The Mosaic Covenant - Unique Character

The Mosaic Covenant was temporary, typical, and preparatory - not an eternal moral law applicable to all peoples at all times.

Key Biblical Evidence:

Nehemiah 9:13-14 (LSB): "Then You came down on Mount Sinai, and spoke with them from heaven; You gave them just judgments and true laws, good statutes and commandments. So You made known to them Your holy Sabbath, and laid down for them commandments, statutes and law, through Your servant Moses."

Critical observation: The Sabbath was "made known" at Sinai. It was not revealed to Adam, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, or Jacob. As Matt Powell noted: "The Sabbath was not made known to the children of Israel until Mount Sinai. So now you're saying there's 2,500 years of history without a commandment to keep the Sabbath."

If Sabbath-keeping were part of God's "eternal unchanging moral law," its revelation would not have waited 2,500 years. This proves it was a covenant sign specific to Israel under the Mosaic administration, not universal moral law.

B. The Change of the Law (Hebrews 7:12)

Exegetical Foundation

Hebrews 7:12 (LSB): "For when the priesthood is changed, of necessity there takes place a change of law also."

Our detailed exegesis of this passage (see: Exegesis - Hebrews 7_11-14) demonstrates:

  1. The Priesthood Changed: From Levitical (tribe of Levi) to Melchizedekian (Christ from Judah)
  2. Logical Necessity: The Mosaic Law required Levitical priesthood; Christ from Judah violates this; therefore the law must have changed
  3. "Change" (μετάθεσις): Not modification but fundamental replacement/removal

Implications for Hebrew Roots Movement

The HRM cannot coherently maintain:

  • Christ as High Priest (from Judah), AND
  • The Mosaic Law system (requiring Levitical priesthood)

These are mutually exclusive. Hebrews 7:12 settles the matter: the law has changed.

C. The Obsolescence of the Old Covenant

Hebrews 8:13 (LSB): "When He said, 'A new covenant,' He has made the first obsolete. But whatever is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to disappear."

The Greek word παλαιόω (palaioō) means to make obsolete, antiquated, worn out. The Old Covenant is obsolete - not temporarily set aside, not merely supplemented, but made obsolete by the New Covenant.

2 Corinthians 3:7-11 contrasts the "ministry of death" (Old Covenant, v. 7) with the "ministry of the Spirit" (New Covenant, v. 8). Paul declares the Old Covenant is "passing away" (v. 11) and that only in Christ is the veil over understanding the Old Covenant removed (v. 14).

D. The Jerusalem Council Verdict (Acts 15)

The Judaizing Controversy

Acts 15:1: "Some men came down from Judea and began teaching the brethren, 'Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved.'"

This is precisely the HRM error: adding Mosaic requirements to faith in Christ.

The Apostolic Decision

Acts 15:10-11 (LSB): "Now therefore why do you put God to the test by placing upon the neck of the disciples a yoke which neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear? But we believe that we are saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, in the same way as they also are."

Acts 15:19-20: James rules that Gentile believers need not keep the Mosaic Law, only abstaining from idol-related practices and sexual immorality - matters of conscience and witness, not salvation.

Application to Hebrew Roots Movement

The first-century church, led by apostles who walked with Jesus, rejected the requirement to keep the Mosaic Law. The HRM's position was condemned 2,000 years ago.

E. The Impossibility of Modern Feast Observance

Levitical Requirements

As Matt Powell emphasized repeatedly in the interview, HRM adherents claim to keep the feasts but violate the actual biblical requirements:

Leviticus 23:37 (LSB): "These are the appointed times of Yahweh which you shall proclaim as holy convocations, to present an offering by fire to Yahweh."

The feasts required:

  1. Levitical priesthood to offer sacrifices
  2. Jerusalem temple as the location
  3. Wave offerings by priests (Lev 23:11)
  4. Animal sacrifices (Lev 23:12, 18-19)
  5. Precise calendar determined by Sanhedrin

Powell stated: "We do not have a temple. We do not have a perfect calendar. All the different Hebrew roots assemblies are keeping feasts at different times because they're taking a best guess when God himself said it has to be a certain time."

The HRM Counterfeit

HRM feast observance typically involves:

  • Gathering for meals
  • Playing music (often rock music)
  • Drinking wine or alcohol
  • Dancing and celebration

Powell recounted: "What they were doing is they were drinking alcohol... and they were playing rock music, beating drums really loud, jumping around, dancing as wildly as one could, right? And so I actually decided to look at the requirements of the Passover."

This bears no resemblance to biblical feast observance. The HRM has created a man-made tradition while claiming to keep God's commandments - the very sin Jesus condemned in the Pharisees (Mark 7:7-9).

F. The Three-Fold Division of the Law

Reformed Understanding

Classic Reformed theology distinguishes three categories within Mosaic Law:

  1. Moral Law - Reflects God's eternal character (Ten Commandments as summary)
  2. Ceremonial Law - Typological, pointing to Christ (sacrifices, feasts, priesthood)
  3. Judicial Law - Civil governance for Israel as theocracy

Westminster Confession 19.3: "Besides this law, commonly called moral, God was pleased to give to the people of Israel, as a church under age, ceremonial laws... All which ceremonial laws are now abrogated, under the new testament."

Westminster Confession 19.4: "To them also, as a body politic, He gave sundry judicial laws, which expired together with the State of that people."

Application to Hebrew Roots Movement

The HRM fails to distinguish these categories, treating all of Mosaic Law as equally binding. However:

  • Ceremonial law (feasts, sacrifices, priesthood) = ABROGATED (Heb 7-10)
  • Judicial law (stoning, theocratic governance) = EXPIRED with Israel's nationhood
  • Moral law (eternal principles of righteousness) = UPHELD as reflecting God's character, though not as covenant of works

The moral law's principles continue in the New Covenant, not as external legal code, but as internalized through the Spirit (Jer 31:33; Ezek 36:26-27).

III. CHRISTOLOGY - Christ as Fulfillment

A. Christ Our Sabbath Rest

Matthew 11:28 (LSB): "Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest."

Hebrews 4:9-10 (LSB): "So there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God. For the one who has entered His rest has himself also rested from his works, as God did from His."

The Sabbath was a type pointing to rest in Christ. As Pastor Fannin explained: "The Sabbath really I believe pictures that we are supposed to rest in Christ."

The author of Hebrews applies the Sabbath principle spiritually: believers who have entered salvation-rest through faith have "ceased from [their] own works as God did from His" (Heb 4:10). We rest from works-righteousness, trusting wholly in Christ's finished work.

B. Christ Our Passover Lamb

1 Corinthians 5:7 (LSB): "Clean out the old leaven so that you may be a new lump, just as you are in fact unleavened. For Christ our Passover also has been sacrificed."

The Passover lamb was a type fulfilled in Christ. To continue annual Passover observance with lamb sacrifice (as some HRM extremists advocate) is to deny that Christ is our Passover.

C. Christ the Fulfillment of All Feasts

Each feast pointed prophetically to Christ:

  • Passover → Christ's crucifixion (1 Cor 5:7)
  • Unleavened Bread → Christ's sinless life
  • First Fruits → Christ's resurrection (1 Cor 15:20, 23)
  • Pentecost → Outpouring of the Spirit (Acts 2)
  • Trumpets → Proclamation of the gospel
  • Day of Atonement → Christ's atoning sacrifice (Heb 9:11-12)
  • Tabernacles → God dwelling with His people in Christ (John 1:14; Rev 21:3)

Colossians 2:16-17 (LSB): "Therefore no one is to judge you in regard to food or drink or in respect to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day—things which are a shadow of what is to come; but the substance belongs to Christ."

The feasts were shadows. Christ is the substance. We don't cling to shadows when we have the reality.

IV. ECCLESIOLOGY - The Church as God's People

A. The Church as Chosen Generation

1 Peter 2:9 (LSB): "But you are A CHOSEN RACE, A royal PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE FOR God's OWN POSSESSION, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light."

Peter applies Old Testament Israel language directly to the Church, composed of both Jewish and Gentile believers.

1 Peter 2:10 (LSB): "for you once were NOT A PEOPLE, but now you are THE PEOPLE OF GOD; you had NOT RECEIVED MERCY, but now you have RECEIVED MERCY."

Pastor Fannin emphasized this in the interview: "This is saying that Christians of all time are the chosen people of God... 'Which in time past were not a people.' Hold on. They were not a people. They were not a nation. They were not Israel, but are now the people of God."

B. Grafting Into the Olive Tree (Romans 11)

Romans 11:17-24 - Gentile believers are grafted into the olive tree alongside believing Jews. However:

  1. This does not make Gentiles ethnic Jews
  2. This does not obligate Gentiles to keep Mosaic covenant
  3. The "root" is Abraham's faith, not Torah observance

Galatians 3:7 (LSB): "Therefore, know that it is those who are of faith who are sons of Abraham."

Galatians 3:29 (LSB): "And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's seed, heirs according to promise."

Grafting in means participation in the Abrahamic promise (justification by faith), not the Mosaic covenant (law-keeping).

C. Modern Israel and Judaism

The Interview's Perspective

Both Fannin and Powell emphasized that modern Judaism is not biblical Judaism. Key points:

  1. Talmud supersedes Torah - Modern Judaism elevates rabbinic traditions above Scripture
  2. Kabbalah influences - Jewish mysticism and occultism infiltrate the religion
  3. Denial of Christ - Judaism explicitly rejects Jesus as Messiah
  4. No temple, no priesthood, no sacrifices - Modern Judaism cannot practice biblical Judaism

Powell stated: "They do not follow the Torah. They do not follow the books of Moses. In fact, they claim that the books of Moses are inferior to the writings of the sages."

Biblical Evaluation

Romans 11:20 (LSB): "Quite right, they were broken off for their unbelief, but you stand by your faith."

Ethnic Israel was broken off the olive tree due to unbelief in Christ. Political Zionism seeks to restore a godless state without the Messiah - this is not the biblical restoration prophesied.

John 8:39-44 - Jesus tells unbelieving Jews: "If you were Abraham's children, you would be doing the deeds of Abraham" (v. 39). He declares their father is the devil, not Abraham (v. 44).

Harsh words, but true: Rejection of Christ = rejection of the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

V. CHRISTIAN LIBERTY AND THE LAW

A. Freedom in Christ

Galatians 5:1 (LSB): "It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery."

Romans 14:5-6 (LSB): "One person judges one day above another, another judges every day alike. Each person must be fully convinced in his own mind. He who regards the day, regards it for the Lord, and he who eats, regards it for the Lord, for he gives thanks to God; and he who does not eat, for the Lord he does not eat and gives thanks to God."

Application

Christians have liberty regarding days (including Sabbath), dietary practices, and other ceremonial matters. Those who choose to observe Saturday as a day of worship may do so unto the Lord. But they must not:

  1. Judge others who don't (Rom 14:3-4)
  2. Claim it's required for righteousness (Gal 5:4)
  3. Impose it as obligation (Col 2:16)

B. The Purpose of the Law

Galatians 3:24-25 (LSB): "Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor."

The law was pedagogical (παιδαγωγός, paidagōgos - "child-conductor"). Its purposes:

  1. Reveal sin (Rom 3:20; 7:7)
  2. Show need for grace (Gal 3:22)
  3. Point to Christ (Heb 10:1)

Once Christ has come, the tutor's role is fulfilled.

Romans 10:4 (LSB): "For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes."

Christ is the τέλος (telos) - both the goal (what law aimed toward) and the termination (law's reign ended) for righteousness.

C. Walking by the Spirit

Galatians 5:16, 18 (LSB): "But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh... But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law."

The New Covenant pattern is not external legal code but internal Spirit-led transformation:

Ezekiel 36:26-27 (LSB): "Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them."

Obedience flows from regeneration, not legal obligation.

VI. REFUTATION OF SPECIFIC ERRORS

A. The Name of Jesus vs. "Yeshua"

The HRM Claim

Many HRM adherents claim "Jesus" is a pagan name and insist on "Yeshua" or other Hebrew pronunciations.

Biblical Response

  1. The New Testament was written in Greek - Not one Hebrew NT manuscript exists
  2. Ἰησοῦς (Iēsous) is the inspired form - This is what the Holy Spirit chose to record
  3. Languages translate names phonetically - Romanian: "Isus"; Spanish: "Jesús"; English: "Jesus"
  4. Modern Hebrew is reconstructed - Eliezer Ben-Yehuda (1800s) revived a dead language; pronunciation is guessed

Powell testified: "Hebrew was a dead language for almost 2,000 years. And so because of that, they have to take a best guess... God's word is absolute. And so God gave a day and said, 'This is when you do it'... And you go to the name of Jesus as well. It is one of the most attacked names throughout history."

Acts 4:12 (LSB): "And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved."

The name that saves is the one the apostles preached: Jesus Christ (Ἰησοῦς Χριστός).

B. Torah-Keeping and Justification

Multiple HRM teachers tie salvation or sanctification to law-keeping.

Zecharia: "No one will enter the kingdom unless they are circumcised of heart and of flesh."

Refutation

Genesis 15:6 (LSB): "Then he believed in Yahweh; and He counted it to him as righteousness."

Abraham was justified by faith before circumcision (Rom 4:9-11). Circumcision was the sign of already-existing faith, not the means of justification.

Acts 15:1, 11 - The apostles rejected circumcision as salvation requirement.

C. Denial of New Birth

Michael Rood: "Nobody is born again."

Refutation

John 3:3 (LSB): "Jesus answered and said to him, 'Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.'"

1 Peter 1:23 (LSB): "for you have been born again not of seed which is perishable but imperishable, that is, through the living and abiding word of God."

Note past tense: "have been born again" (ἀναγεγεννημένοι, anagegennēmenoi) - perfect passive participle, completed action.

Titus 3:5 (LSB): "He saved us, not on the basis of works which we did in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit."

Regeneration is God's work, not ours. It has already occurred in believers.

D. Talmud and Kabbalah

The Problem

Many HRM adherents study Talmud and Kabbalah as authoritative alongside Scripture.

Refutation

Mark 7:7-9 (LSB): "BUT IN VAIN DO THEY WORSHIP ME, TEACHING AS DOCTRINES THE PRECEPTS OF MEN.' Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the tradition of men... You nicely set aside the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition."

Jesus condemned the oral traditions (later codified in Talmud) for making void God's word.

The Talmud contains blasphemies against Christ. The Kabbalah is Jewish mysticism rooted in Babylonian occultism. Neither has any place in Christian study.

VII. ESCHATOLOGICAL IMPLICATIONS

A. Hebrew Roots and the Antichrist System

Pastor Fannin raised the connection between HRM and end-times deception:

"Hebrew Roots Movement... is going to be the vehicle of the Antichrist... They're going to use such verses to say you need to put in your hand or in your forehead a name, a word, the word of God."

Deuteronomy 6:8 (LSB): "You shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontals between your eyes."

HRM emphasis on phylacteries (literal application of Deut 6:8) could prepare people to accept a literal mark in hand/forehead as "God's commandment."

B. The Third Temple Movement

HRM often promotes rebuilding Jerusalem temple. However:

  1. Christ is the true temple (John 2:19-21)
  2. Believers are God's temple (1 Cor 3:16; 6:19)
  3. Any rebuilt temple would be antichrist - It would deny Christ's finished work and seek to reinstitute animal sacrifices

2 Thessalonians 2:3-4 warns of the "man of lawlessness" who "sits in the temple of God, displaying himself as being God."

Christians should not support rebuilding a temple for antichrist to defile.

VIII. PRACTICAL APPLICATION

A. How to Help HRM Adherents

Key Questions (from Matt Powell)

  1. "Who keeps you saved? How long are you saved for?" - Exposes works-based salvation
  2. "How do I observe the feasts according to the requirements in Leviticus?" - Exposes impossibility of true observance

Gentle, Truthful Engagement

2 Timothy 2:24-25 (LSB): "And the Lord's slave must not be quarrelsome, but be kind to all, able to teach, patient when wronged, with gentleness correcting those who are in opposition, if perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to the full knowledge of the truth."

Speak truth in love. Many HRM adherents are sincere but deceived. Show compassion while firmly defending the gospel.

B. Protecting the Church

Titus 1:13-14 (LSB): "This testimony is true. For this reason reprove them severely so that they may be sound in the faith, not paying attention to Jewish myths and commandments of men who turn away from the truth."

Church leaders must:

  1. Teach clear doctrine on Law and Grace
  2. Warn against Judaizing errors
  3. Discipline those promoting HRM
  4. Protect new believers from confusion

C. Celebrating Gospel Freedom

Colossians 2:20-23 (LSB): "If you have died with Christ to the elementary principles of the world, why, as if you were living in the world, do you submit yourself to decrees, such as, 'Do not handle, do not taste, do not touch!'... These are matters which have, to be sure, the appearance of wisdom in self-made religion... but are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh."

HRM appears spiritual through its rigorous observances. But God is not impressed by external ritual divorced from heart transformation.

John 4:23-24 (LSB): "But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth."

True worship is spiritual, not ritual. We worship not by feast-keeping but by Spirit-led devotion to Christ.

Conclusion

The Hebrew Roots Movement, despite its appeal to Scripture and claims of returning to "authentic" faith, fundamentally errs by:

  1. Denying justification by faith alone through requiring Torah-keeping
  2. Misunderstanding covenant structure by applying Mosaic covenant to Church
  3. Rejecting the finished work of Christ through ongoing feast/sacrifice emphasis
  4. Creating impossible obligations (feast requirements without temple/priesthood)
  5. Syncretizing with Judaism (Talmud, Kabbalah influence)
  6. Promoting false assurance through works-based sanctification

The Reformed response is clear:

We are saved by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.

The Mosaic covenant has been superseded by the New Covenant. The law's ceremonial and judicial aspects are abrogated. Christ has fulfilled the feasts, become our Sabbath rest, and perfected us forever through His one sacrifice.

We are not under law but under grace (Rom 6:14).

We are free in Christ (Gal 5:1).

We worship in Spirit and truth (John 4:24).
